The Best Budgeting Apps Without a Subscription (2026)

ComparisonPersonal FinanceAnti-SaaS

Subscription budgeting apps have a built-in irony: they charge you $80–120 every year to help you spend less money. If that maths bothers you, this list is for you — six budgeting tools you can use without a monthly fee, compared honestly.

Disclosure: we build Zeroed, the first app on this list. We’ve included its weaknesses alongside everyone else’s, and every other app here is genuinely worth your consideration — several of them are free and excellent.

1. Zeroed — pay once, privacy-first (ours)

Price: $19.99 one-time at the founder price (until 14 February 2027, then $39.99), covering Windows and Android today with iOS and macOS in progress. Fully unlocked 34-day trial, no card, no account.

The pitch: zero-based envelope budgeting where your data physically stays on your device, AES-256 encrypted. No servers, no account, no tracking. Imports from CSV, PDF, OFX, QFX, and QIF statements with duplicate detection, plus OCR receipt scanning. Reconciliation, goals, debt payoff planning, net worth tracking, and optional sync through your own Google Drive. If the trial ends and you don’t buy, the app goes read-only — your data stays viewable and exportable forever.

Honest weaknesses: no automatic bank sync (deliberate, but a real trade-off), no web app, no built-in couples collaboration yet, and iOS/macOS are still coming. If those matter more to you than privacy or price, read on.

2. Actual Budget — free, open source, local-first

Price: free and open source.

Actual is the open-source darling of the envelope-budgeting world, and deservedly so: local-first design, a clean interface, and an active community. If you’re comfortable running a sync server yourself (or using a hosted setup you configure), it’s a superb choice — genuinely the app we’d point technical users toward if they never want to pay anyone anything.

Honest weaknesses: getting multi-device sync running requires self-hosting comfort; there’s no built-in statement OCR; and support is community-based. Non-technical users can find setup a wall.

3. Buckets — pay-once desktop budgeting

Price: one-time licence (desktop).

Buckets is the closest philosophical cousin to Zeroed: an independent developer selling envelope budgeting as software you buy once and own, with your data in a local file. It’s desktop-focused, charmingly straightforward, and honest about what it is.

Honest weaknesses: mobile is a companion rather than a full app, development moves at indie pace, and the interface is more functional than polished.

4. HomeBank — free desktop veteran

Price: free.

HomeBank has been quietly maintained for decades. It runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux, imports OFX/QFX/CSV, and produces genuinely useful reports and trend analysis. For a no-cost desktop ledger with budgeting features, it’s hard to argue with.

Honest weaknesses: the interface shows its age, there’s no real mobile experience, and it’s more “categorised ledger with budgets” than guided envelope budgeting.

5. MoneyManager Ex — free, open source, everywhere

Price: free and open source.

Runs on practically everything (including a portable version that lives on a USB stick), stores data in a single local file, and covers accounts, budgets, and reporting. A solid, private, no-cost choice for people who want simple ledger-style money tracking.

Honest weaknesses: budgeting is a feature rather than the philosophy — if you specifically want zero-based/envelope method guidance, it won’t teach you.

6. GnuCash — free double-entry accounting

Price: free and open source.

The heavyweight: true double-entry accounting that can handle personal finances, investments, and even small-business books. Completely local, completely free, completely yours.

Honest weaknesses: the learning curve is real. GnuCash is accounting software that can budget, not a budgeting app — beginners often bounce off it.

How to choose

Whatever you pick from this list, the outcome is the same: your budget stops being someone else’s recurring revenue. For the full argument on why we think that matters, read our manifesto — or see what YNAB actually costs over five years.
